WTH?

Been many moons since the last blog.  Time flies when "life happens".

Anyone that knows me will tell you that I HATE TO COOK!!!  If it was up to me, and it generally IS NOT, I would have a bowl of cereal or take out for dinner every night!  But due to the fact that I now live with someone who thinks that every night a hot meal must be prepared, I cook.

I also cook this meal and have it ready at a certain time.  At our house it is summer hours and winter hours as far as when dinner needs to be ready.  So since it is now fall I try to have dinner ready at 7:30 PM.  This arrangement is also NOT my idea and is the brain child of the same someone that thinks that we need to have a hot meal cooked every night.

Last night I thawed burgers that I had already formed and frozen.  Cooked them, sliced an onion to top them.  Thawed and toasted burger buns, nuked a can of Bush's Honey Baked Beans.  Topped the burgers with cheese and also baked fries.  As well as getting out plates, condiments and beverages.

Dinner was cooked and ready to be eaten at 7:27 PM.  Due to the fact that someone had guests that did not leave by 7:30, dinner proceeded to get cold.  I realize that someone would think it was rude to tell the guests that he needed to get inside because dinner would be waiting for him.  But seriously, isn't it ALSO RUDE not to come in to tell me that someone would be late and would not be in until after 8:00 PM????

Want to guess which one of us was mad?  Makes me want to STOP cooking dinner!!!

My Philosophy
We can never compromise our commitment to family values nor to the commitment that the proper function of government is to do for people only those things that cannot be done by individuals for themselves.
We must unfailingly support free enterprise and the encouragement of individual incentive. Individuals, not governments, tend to have the best economic solutions.
Above all we must never compromise on the core truth that the government that governs least governs best. The Federal government and State government as well, need to get off the backs of business and out of the classroom.
In reaching out to the young, independent voter who in this cycle in particular feels empowered, we must always be aware that they love America just as much as we do; they just may see their world from a different perspective and we must respect that while working to accentuate the ideals on which we agree.
I believe my greatest talent is my ability to bring people together. I am open- minded. I have a direct, straight forward style that tends to win people’s confidence.
I know I cannot succeed alone and act accordingly.
I believe more important than knowing all the answers is having the humility to ask the right questions
I believe we cannot afford to do business as usual in the United States. We must re-examine the way we deliver public services, create jobs and improve our quality of life without using a public payroll. Businesses call this “best practices.”
I believe our Government must be inclusive and focused and accountable.
I believe in the ‘Big Tent’, Milton Freidman said, “There is somebody wiser than any of us and that is all of us.”
I believe the path out of our current economic troubles is to put American ingenuity to work by encouraging the participation of our residents who understand business development, the value of government services and who know how to measure our successes and keep us accountable for our progress. Whether it’s the way we use our natural resources, our technology, or our educational system, I believe I have been called to lead the charge for change.
I believe sound long-term financial planning is essential. Our financial strategy must include policy that does not allow debt to become the escape hatch for poor planning
I believe politics should not be a career. We need to build a broad base of citizen involvement and bring folks to the table in a way that will help us meet our challenges.
I believe people need to see the consequences of today’s decisions on tomorrow.
I believe our decisions today must not compromise our needs of tomorrow.
I believe in the United States Constitution, including the 2nd Amendment.
I believe anyone convicted of a violent crime should forfeit their 2nd Amendment rights.
I believe as a Congressman I will never be asked to decide Row v. Wade.
On a personal level, I believe abortion should never be used as a birth control method and should never be funded by the Government.
I believe in a strong National Defense and I believe that even though there is not shooting in the streets in the United States, we are indeed at war and there are bad people in the world who wish us harm. I believe the reason there is not shooting in the streets in the United States is because we made the commitment to “take the fight to them” after they attacked us and it was the correct decision based on the intelligence we had at the time.
My Background
My views on national security were formed as the son of a decorated veteran of the 82nd airborne; the brother of a veteran of the 101st airborne; the brother of a Woman Marine and the brother of a member of the 1st Cavalry. On our family vacations we would visit my grandfather’s grave in Arlington. Our family has always taken our responsibility to the Nation’s security seriously.
I am a Delaware County, NY native. My family has been in this region since the 1700’s. I will not be the first Congressman in the family. That honor goes to my ancestor Joshua Clayton who was a U.S. Congressman, a U.S. Senator and the first Governor of Delaware.
Nor will I be the second, that honor would go to John Middleton Clayton who served in both the U.S. Congress and Senate in addition to being Secretary of State under Zachary Taylor.
I am married to the former Joyce Kilpatrick, a direct descendant of the first settlers of Delaware County, NY. We will have been married 29 years this week. We have 2 children and 6 grandchildren all living in Delaware and Chenango Counties.
I am Export Manager and Logistics Manager for Larsen Farms, Dubois, ID; one of the largest agribusinesses in the United States.
Prior to merging my business with Larsen Farms in 2002 I owned a trucking company and farm commodities brokerage for 18 years. I still own a farm in Delaware County, NY.
For the 5 years prior to running my own business, I was an editor at Holstein World Magazine, Sandy Creek, NY.
My journalism career began at WDLA, Walton, NY where I spent 7 years.
While I have not held statewide elective office I am an elected representative on the Hamden, NY Town Council.
I have been elected as a representative of Hamden’s Republican Party on the County Committee for the past 13 years.
I served on the Pulaski, NY Board of Education for 4 years.
In industry I have held several nationally elected offices which include 10 years as a director and the presidency in 2000 of America’s oldest farm organization, The National Hay Association (which by-the-way was founded in 1895 in Canajoharie, NY. It is now based in St. Petersburg, FL).
In 2007 I was elected president of The National Forage Testing Association; the trade organization responsible for setting the standards for forage laboratories in the United States.
Currently I am Co-chair of the U.S. Export Processors Council which works with USDA to negotiate trade standards of forage products with our trading partners worldwide.
I have been chosen to represent the United States Foreign Agricultural Service on trade missions to Morocco; Mexico and China. This spring I will be going to Costa Rica.
In 2007 I accompanied Governor Butch Otter of Idaho to Shanghai where we signed a letter of intent for Larsen Farms to export the first alfalfa hay ever to be shipped from the United States to The People’s Republic of China.
As you can see, I am not a career politician. I have experience which connects with business owners and the common working person. I am not independently wealthy and I know what it is like to meet a payroll and make a mortgage payment.
In addition, I have local, national and international experience and have been elected to positions in all those arenas.
Let me close with a favorite quote from Albert Einstein, “The problems that exist in the world today cannot be solved by the level of thinking that created them.”
I am never without my Blackberry. Feel free to call or email anytime, I work 24-7.
Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to representing you,
Bob Bishop

In Memory of Judy Berkery

This week I learned of the passing of a dear gal that I worked with at Combined Life Insurance Company. She was a great gal and a sweet friend. I will truly miss her so much.

If anyone would like to make a donation for cancer research, please go to the Dana Farber website and make a donation. There is more information about this site at the bottom of Judy's obitutary.

We have got to stop this mean Mother Fuc@*& called CANCER. I'm tired of it taking away family and friends!!! It has to STOP!

LATHAM Judy F. Berkery, 50, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 11, 2006 after a courageous and valiant battle with cancer. She was born in Burlington, Vt. and is the beloved daughter of Edmund S. Steffler and the late Frances Markham Steffler. Judy was a 1978 graduate of the University of New Hampshire and had taught physical education in Maine before returning to Latham. She was employed with Combined Life Insurance for 15 years and more recently she worked with Farm Family Insurance Company in Glenmont. Judy was a longtime volunteer and coach with Latham Circle Soccer, CYC Basketball, Latham Lassies, North Colonie Pop Warner, Shaker Jr. High and Shaker High School. She was the past president of the Shaker High All Sports Booster Club. Judy was an avid bowler and softball player. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Assumption Church where she had taught religion and served as a lector. A relentless volunteer, Judy worked diligently to support the American Cancer Society and its Relay for Life. She was keynote speaker at their Stride's breakfast and was recognized as a legislative ambassador. She volunteered with Gilda's Club, To Life (Breast Cancer Awareness) and the Dana Farber Marathon Challenge in Boston. Judy's spirit was always positive and upbeat. She was inspirational to numerous people from many walks of life. Judy was always thinking of others and rarely of her own concerns. She is remembered as being determined, strong willed and sometimes even stubborn, however, her kindness and genuine concern for others is our most lasting memory. In addition to her father, she is survived by her beloved husband, Thomas P. Berkery; her devoted daughter, Kyrie Berkery; her siblings, Debbie Chesbro and Larry Steffler; mother-in-law, Nancy Berkery; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jim and Ruth Berkery, Janice and Matt Osborne and Sheila and Ned Sheehan. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be Wednesday morning at 10:00 at Our Lady of Assumption Church, Latham, where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie, (Rt. 5-south of Central Avenue). Expressions of sympathy may be made to Newcomerfamily.com. At Judy's request, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to dfmarathon.kintera.org (click-support a runner-then type in berkery). Don't Mourn My Death, Celebrate My Life
